Letter: Golfing fees

I WAS interested to read Donald Trump’s proud boast (your report, 10 September) that his newly-constructed golf course on the Menie estate in Aberdeenshire will be the “Best Golf Course in the world.”

I was further astounded to learn the cost of a round of golf at some of Europe’s top golf courses. Mr Trump will charge an incredible £200 for the privilege of a game on his new course. He is of course not alone in setting these, in my opinion extortionate, fees: the Old Course St Andrews will next year set you back £150; Turnberry £175; Valderama, Spain £275 and, unbelievably, Wentworth a cool £360.

I am sure that golfers who pay these prices do not appreciate that they could play Bruntsfield Links, one the oldest golf courses in the world, which lies just a few minutes from Edinburgh’s City centre – far less that they could do so for free.
