Letter: Golf gripes

It would seem that the Royal and Ancient Club is more interested in protecting its rule book above anything else.

When it rejected 70-year-old billionaire Herb Kohler for membership on the grounds of him being over 60 (your report, 16 July), they didn't want to make an exception, because doing so would make it awkward to maintain their cherished rule book with a straight face.

May I be helpful with a suggestion so that the club officials can turn around their obvious embarrassment into a smile they can be proud of.

Revise the rulebook at once and ditch all ageist and sexist policies.

Be proud of your rightful historical role in promoting golf, show some leadership and stop this blatant discrimination now.
