Letter: Get rid of lists

Brian Monteith (Perspective, 20 December) calls for the parties to open up their selection processes for choosing candidates for the regional lists for future Holyrood elections by holding open primaries.

This would do little to improve representation in the parliament and would be a great waste of money.

Instead, we should remove the need for the lists all together and elect all our MSPs on the same basis. To ensure proportionality among the parties and to give the voters real say in which candidates are elected, we should change the voting system to STV-PR.

Then all MSPs would be directly responsible to a local constituency of voters.
