Letter: Fishing ban

How public are Glasgow's public parks? In order to fish for coarse fish (such as pike and roach) in Kelvingrove Park you need to pay £30 for a permit, not to Glasgow City Council but to the River Kelvin Angling Association.

But don't rush out at once to buy your permit, for all fishing on the association's water has been banned from 31 October to 10 February. While law prohibits fishing for certain species at certain times, there is no closed season on coarse fishing in Scotland. By privatising the fishing in its waters, Glasgow City Council has closed the door to the thousands of council taxpayers who could be getting better use of the parks that they pay for.
