Letter: Fine example

Scott Reid wrote an excellent article on the increasing number of cyclists who regularly break the law (Perspective, 13 July).

Even in Linlithgow I regularly see selfish cyclists who, because they are "saving the planet", feel they can ignore the rules.

A few days ago one cyclist, stripped to the waist, overtook me as I was stopped at a Pelican crossing, narrowly missing the pedestrian who was halfway across.

Dangerous cycling. He was obviously on a timed circuit.

One schooldays, youths race each other and cycle on the road and then, if the lights are against them, they switch to the pavement. Careless cycling.

Regularly our high street suffers from pavement cyclists who hurl abuse at anyone daring to tell them to get off.

West Lothian Council is not helpful at all since my plea for "no cycling on the pavement" notices in the high street was refused.

It is a pity that Scott Reid's colleague was only fined 30.

The maximum penalties in the Highway Code are as follows: dangerous cycling, 2,500; careless cycling, 1,000; cycling on the pavement, 500.

If fewer 30 fines were levied and more 500 fines, the cycling problem would go away overnight.
