Letter: Exploited Scots

Michael Kelly (Perspective, 18 August) is opposed to Scottish independence but is in favour of former colonies escaping from their conquerors who "exploited their resources".

But is this not precisely the position of Scotland? Despite the Scottish Parliament, we are still ruled on the most important matters by Westminster, where we are outvoted 10 to one.

The income from the oil in Scottish waters could have made us as wealthy as Norway but it has been seized by the Westminster government.

The highly dangerous nuclear submarines have been based on the Clyde close to our own major centre of population.

Does Scotland not have as much right to escape from all of this as any former colony?
