Letter: EU ratification

Alexander McKay (Letters, 8 January) is wrong to state that on 6 June, 1975, the people of Scotland were given the chance to vote for membership of the European union.

The question asked in that referendum, was: "Do you think that the UK should stay in the (then] Common Market?" So the question asked was never about applying to become a member of the EU. I voted yes because at that time Scotland, as part of the UK, had enough economic problems to deal with without considering a possible withdrawal from the EU.
