Letter: Energy profiteers

The price being paid by many of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Scotland for the blatant profiteering of utility companies is far too high and brings shame on our nation.

Not only do individuals and families have to suffer cold, damp, ill-health and hunger, it also costs Scottish people their lives. Profiteering must be investigated and stamped out.

The simple facts are that fuel is too expensive and we need too much fuel to heat our homes.

Shelter Scotland therefore welcomes the fact that Ofgem is turning the heat back on to the energy companies to pressure them into moderating their pricing and to ensure consumers - especially the most vulnerable in society - are treated more fairly (your report, 26 November).

The Scottish government can help reduce the amount of fuel used by prioritising the building of new energy-efficient housing and raising the standard of existing housing stock.
