Letter: End the secrecy

ALMOST every week we read about a young soldier being killed in Afghanistan. The reason we are being told as to why they are sacrificing their lives is they are fighting for our freedom and democracy.

Then I read that the government is blocking the release of secret messages from Tony Blair to George W Bush about the Iraq War (your report, 19 January).

This I am willing to accept if it is the government blocking it, but in fact it is Cabinet Secretary Gus O'Donnell, the UK's top civil servant. David Cameron and Nick Clegg promised to publish the documents when in opposition. Will they do it now?
