Letter: Emerging accord

The letter from Gavin Ross (6 January) on the proposed merger between Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) makes some thoughtful comments on the fundamental differences in character of the respective teaching and learning methods of these institutions.

I agree it is important that education secretary Mike Russell is aware of these considerations and ensures the distinctive pedagogic style of ECA is preserved. We live in a time when distinctiveness needs to be supported and individuality valued in our society. Nevertheless, it is also the case that communication and collaboration are vital and that differences need not be boundaries for thinking and expression but might instead set up a new dynamic.

It is important for artists to be aware of and connected to serious research, so the proposed merger may offer more structured connections for development of new approaches.

In that respect I agree with Principal Howard (Letters, 8 January) that, on balance, the merger offers the best way forward.
