Letter: Education cash

I realise Councillor Rose (Letters, 15 February) meant to attack me for criticising the City of Edinburgh Council's decision to abolish the post of principal teacher (PT), but it was interesting that he agreed that "a faculty system is inferior to that of principal teachers" and the gist of the rest of his letter agreed that the decision was taken for financial rather than educational reasons.

He failed to produce any educational reasons for the decision. He says head teachers should be free to adopt the best educational system for their schools, but that is not what has happened. The council decided all PT posts should go, whether schools want that or not.

I agree that, when cash is in short supply, it is a matter of priorities, but I understand that the Lib Dem/SNP administration rejected an alternative budget which would have saved the same amount of money without attacking the education of our young people.

Our young people really are getting a raw deal at present in all sorts of ways.
