Letter: Cycling takes drugs seriously

I AM disappointed at the attitude that Tom English is taking to cycling (Sport, October 3).

Yes cycling has had drug problems and the situation with Alberto Contador is worrying, however, I can't see another sport that is trying as hard to stamp out drug cheats as cycling, from the bio-passport that accounts for 20% of the UCI's budget to the amount of drugs tests a cyclist has to take (about 50 tests a year for the top cyclists, compared with around three to four for a football player).

During the Operation Puerto case in Spain the rumours were of 20% of the clients being cyclists, 10% tennis players, 10% footballers. The reason that cycling has the perception of a dope-ridden sport is because they actually test and catch people.
