To TRY to justify success by culling grey squirrels, Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (SSRS) is quoted as saying, "red squirrels have also been spotted in other areas like Stoneywood near Aberdeen for the first time" (your report, 17 May).

The last time similar claims were made about woods surrounding Aberdeen by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Forestry Commission neglected to remove its promotional web pages showing that red squirrels had been there all along.

Astonishingly, SSRS have done the same thing. This time they have neglected to realise that the Scottish Squirrel Survey Map of Aberdeen 2000-2006 showed red squirrels in the Stoneywood area side by side with greys.
