Letter: Clegg's arrogance

Your report (19 February) that the election to the Scottish Parliament will be delayed until 2016 is premature. It is based on a letter from the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, which makes a number of unwarranted assumptions.

First, it assumes that the Fixed Term Parliament Bill, which would set a five-year term for Westminster, will become law. That is an arrogant assumption since it has not yet reached the House of Lords. Second, it assumes the Tory-led coalition would survive the full term, which also smacks of the arrogance which is now common in the Deputy Prime Minister.

Scottish political leaders should not jump so readily to his command.
