Letter: Chilling distortion

If Mike Haseler (Letters, 23 June) wants to dispute the scientific consensus surrounding global warming he should submit his research to a scientific journal for peer review by climatologists.

He is correct that there is a scam going on behind global warming. Unfortunately, it is being run by big oil and fronted by Lord Monckton. It regularly distorts and impugns climate science. Big oil knows it is responsible for global warming, but rather than admit to its liability, it has taken the route the tobacco companies did in the 1970s and 1980s and mounted a PR campaign.

Climate sceptics like to claim the earth has been cooling; it has not. They say that Olaf Johansen has stated that overall Greenland ice is not melting; he said the opposite. They contend there has been no loss of sea ice in the Arctic when there has been. Climate-change deniers proclaim that there is no correlation between carbon dioxide levels and global temperatures over the past 500 million years; there is. They assert that Pre-Cambrian ice levels show that CO2 has no effect on climate when the opposite is true. They maintain there has been no change in Himalayan glaciers for 200 years; there has. They also say only one Himalayan glacier is retreating when lots of them are.

They claim a paper by Dr Rachel T Pinker shows that a loss of cloud covering is responsible for a recent rise in global temperatures; she says no such thing. They say some planets in the solar system are warming because of the sun; again simply not true.
