Letter: Capital offence

As A half-Australian Glaswegian now residing in the east, I was tickled by an e-mail received from my brother, Dr Peter Hill, from his home in Geelong.

Reading the Sydney Morning Herald (15 October), he made an unexpected discovery. The paper's diarist speculated on the possible presence of Billy Connolly, Susan Boyle and Rod Stewart at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, before dropping this bombshell: "All three are famous Scots (well, Stewart's dad was Scottish), and Scotland's capital, Glasgow, will host the next Commonwealth Games in 2014." Pete always wished he had been born in a capital city. Now (a mere 57 years after the event) his dream has come true.

As the baton is passed to Glasgow for the 2014 Games, the performance in Delhi of Team Scotland is to be applauded. Despite challenging conditions, the Scots passed the 18-25 medal target with 26 medals, including nine golds. And this was in spite of the withdrawal of some high-profile individuals.

While we lie tenth in the medal table, in terms of population per medal, we are ahead of the likes of England, Canada and South Africa. We should look forward to Glasgow 2014 with not just hope, but expectation.
