Letter: Asian confusion

Twice recently I have read reports in the press that police spokesmen have urged us to be on the look-out for suspects described as being "of Asian appearance" (your report, 10 May).

I am a little confused by this. Since I am generally willing to help the police with their inquiries, I wonder – should I be on the look-out for someone of Japanese or Chinese appearance? Or perhaps a Malaysian, or someone from the Indian sub-continent? Or should I be looking for someone of Arab or Israeli appearance? Or perhaps a Turk?

Since we are told that we are now living in a multi-cultural society, it might be helpful if the police were to be more specific, with a view to the correct person being apprehended.
