Letter: Alcohol limit

Proposals being currently considered to lower the alcohol limit for drivers (your report, 17 June) will not make any difference to the level of deaths and injuries on our roads.

How many accidents are caused by someone driving with 80mg of alcohol in their blood? Few, I would think; is there really any hard evidence to show this change would be effective?

Those who do cause accidents through driving while over the limit will be the same people who regularly do this regardless, not those who restrict their drinking to within the limit. The bad guys will pay no attention to such things as legal limits.

The only way to deal with them is educate them to amend their ways or lock them up. They are in the same mould as those who drive without tax, insurance or an MoT.

The new limit might as well be set to apply to anyone who drives past a pub or off-licence for all the good it would do.
