Letter: 'ABE' red card

The intervention by police officers to effectively ban "Anyone But England" T-shirts from being displayed in HMV's Scottish stores is ludicrous. Take the rivalry out of football and there is little left other than a pointless game. England fans have, after all, responded to Scottish banter with the spirited retort "SNP – Scotland's not playing", which the Nats took in good fun.

Wasting resources on forcing shops to remove T-shirts expressing a point of view risks making the police unpopular and, worse, makes the UK resemble an oppressive country like Burma or China where freedom of expression is officially banned. Surely we're better and bigger than that?
