Lesser spotted

ON A recent British Ornithological Survey over three days and 400 miles in Caithness and Sutherland I found only one kestrel. Thirty years ago, I would have expected a score.

It seems that as the RSPB has grown, the numbers of once common birds – kestrels, song thrushes, yellowhammers – have collapsed. Perhaps the RSPB should focus on saving these rather than on sexier reintroductions of raptors?
