Leader: Island hopping

ISLAND hopping (feature, 26 July) was encouraged by a joint Scottish Islands Passport Scheme venture between the Highland and Islands Development Board and the Post Office when they issued Scottish Islands Passports in 1988.

The idea was to collect post marks from different islands that you visited and each year there was a prize draw for those who entered by sending vouchers issued by the Post Office when your Island Passport was tamped.

A small fee was levied for the work involved by the Post Office staff and went towards supporting the island's vital Post Office Network. Sadly the scheme seems to have ceased.
