Last orders lesson

I WAS delighted to read Robin Waddell’s letter, (“Last orders”, 25 February). Having been a teacher for many long years, I immediately envisaged a staff room at lunchtime: “OK folks, red or white?” This wouldn’t be allowed to happen, of course. After all, teachers must set an example through their behaviour. They are not allowed to smoke either, in any part of their workplace – bad for the health of self and others.

Can MPs smoke in their bars? I suspect the answer may be yes. Odd, isn’t it, that the admonishers of the behaviour of others are such setters of poor example. MPs are paid to do a responsible job and their judgment should never be impaired through self-indulgence. Och well, being retired, I’m off to have a lunchtime glass of vino.
