Language

If I remember correctly, Ambrose Bierce once described language as "a dialect with an army". By this criterion, Scots is merely a dialect and nothing more. Gaelic once had the clans to defend it, but nowadays it is surely doomed for the same reason, in spite of bilingual road signs.
