Labour’s soul

Douglas Turner (Letters, 26 May) suggests that the place for the Labour Party to rediscover its soul, purpose and role is in an independent Scotland.

The Labour Party retains these.

Unlike the SNP, it recognises that progress towards its historical values of justice, equality and individual fulfilment lies not in reviving or creating boundaries and barriers between people and peoples but in breaking them down.

Unlike the SNP, it recognises that our common humanity and history with the rest of the UK, our shared language and vision of a better society and world and the problems we face are much more significant in choosing our government framework than geographical area.
