Labour legacy

Dr Scott Arthur (Letters, 26 May) welcomes David Mundell’s proposed commission on full fiscal autonomy (FFA).

However, all the necessary information is already available in the published government figures, via GERS (Government Expenditure and Revenue Scotland) and elsewhere, published over the past 25 years, so a commission would be a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Regarding welfare cuts, Dr Arthur picks the wrong target – his ire should be addressed to the sole surviving Labour MP in Scotland, Ian Murray, because it was the financial and economic mismanagement by his party over its 13 years and its “legacy” of accumulated £160 billion debt it left in 2010 that has forced budgetary rectitude upon subsequent governments.

Does Dr Arthur agree with the creed of Ed Miliband and his cohorts that they did nothing wrong? And does he think the next tranche of Westminster-imposed cuts will help or hinder any moves towards FFA or independence?
