Andrew HN Gray (Letters, 6 September) criticised money being spent on the promotion of the Gaelic. I couldn’t agree more but I’d go further and suggest that those who want to learn the language should pay for the privilege, because privilege it is; no-one needs to speak that tongue.

The few people who understand it are right here in Scotland. There is not one other country outside these shores whose people can or want to read this ancient, dead language (apart from a few die-hard ex-pats).

This endeavour by the few to impose it on the many should put their money where their mouth is (unintended pun).

And here’s the hilarious bit: Gaelic road signs are erected but can only be read by those who know exactly where they are.
