Just the facts

Mr Iain Brown (Letters, 22 September) appears to believe your front-page headlines, “Scotland says No – referendum souvenir edition” and “Salmond quits” (20 September), were in poor taste and self-congratulatory.

Well, I have news for Mr Brown – both headlines were merely statements of fact. As for the inference that the purpose of the souvenir edition was somehow to gloat over or celebrate a No victory is to
misunderstand the meaning of “souvenir”.

The dictionary defines souvenir as a keepsake or a memento. No mention of celebrating an event.

It would be difficult to argue that the referendum was not a momentous occasion. I am sure The Scotsman would have produced a souvenir edition irrespective of the outcome.
