John Gibson: This store is now back in clover

Four-leaf clovers are again sprouting in Princes Street.

Romanes & Paterson general manager David King explains: "Supposedly they bring good luck and we've been out of that here, obliged to have scaffolding up since mid-March until now while the ornate stone carvings, which include four-leaf clovers, on our balustrade overlooking the street, have been replaced.

"Also, we've had the the store's front-of-house repainted because of the dirtying from the tram works. With the scaffolding removed, Romanes & Paterson are again offering one of the finest reach-out-and-touch views of the Castle."

No blubbing, Jo

Stoppit, Jo, stoppit! (Her friends get to call her Jo). I'm forewarned that in the new run of Who Do You Think You Are? beginning next week JK Rowling bursts into tears three times in one interview.

Not you, too, Jo! Mind you, everybody's sobbing on telly. Bubbling on the box has become fashionable. It's the thing to do.

I do wish Jo would do something about her cleavage, though. Over-generous with it. To the extent I find it a distraction. This isn't simply an observation, it's a complaint.

Mighty Murdo

They're not all numpties, nerds and nutters in football. Meaning players past and present. Include agents if you like. What the game needs is more Murdo MacLeods.

Murdo's genuine ready smile lit up the Easter Road press lounge for Celtic's visit. And how about that tan! "I've had three weeks in Egypt and we never leave the Hyatt Regency, in Sharm el Sheikh. The hotel's got everything we want."

Murdo and his missus like to hobnob. They've brushed with two Brit PMs and a lot of Middle East royalty there.

Oh, to see Murdo back in a Hibs jersey. He was their captain when they won the Skol Cup. After three years there he kicked his last ball for them in April '93. Played 95 matches for them, mostly in the Alex Miller era and Alex, remember, wore a permanent smile.
