Job hurdles

Reading your article (25 November) about the large number of Neets (not in education, employment or training), I noted that one case study was a boy with dyslexia who reported extra difficulties in finding work and also a negative response from the Jobcentre when seeking help. This, regrettably, is, not an isolated case.

Dyslexia Scotland has recently published Dyslexia and Us, a collection of over 100 stories of personal experiences of being dyslexic. They find it hard to get jobs because they can’t complete application forms and the Jobcentre apparently hasn’t got time to help them to do so.

It is estimated that over 10 per cent of the population is dyslexic and perhaps with targeted funding and support in schools, the number of Neets could be reduced by that amount. What a long-term saving that would be.
