'Irrelevant' trams

Cable cars would be more suitable to Edinburgh's geography than trams, and they could provide a tourist attraction as they do in several cities in Europe.

For easy and affordable transport in Edinburgh, trams are irrelevant (your report, 11 March).

The main route they will run, from the city centre to the airport, is already covered by a frequent bus service.

I don't know of any major city which has a better and cheaper service to its airport.

It will cost us dear, not only financially, but also in continued disruption, pollution and congestion.

At the very least, those in charge of the tram project should now engage in contingency planning.

As the Edinburgh tram project rumbles into another crisis, this is obviously a shining example of gross incompetence by people who are in charge of taxpayers' money.

The country is almost bankrupt and the powers that be continue to throw money into an empty skip.

It would be unwise to abandon the project at this stage, despite the fact that it is a white elephant.

But they should concentrate on the link between Haymarket and the airport and abandon the other proposed routes, which, like the airport, are adequately served by the excellent bus services.
