Irish have our vote

Allan Massie’s assertion that “Ireland is a foreign country” (Perspective, 9 April) is incorrect. The Ireland Act 1949 s. 2(1) specifically declared that, even though the Republic of Ireland was no longer a British dominion, it would not be treated as a foreign country for the purposes of British law.

That is why Irish citizens have always had the right to vote in elections at every level in the UK.
