Internet peace

My first letter of complaint about shop noise (Letters, 1 March) was at least a dozen years ago. The response I got was more or less that the staff liked it.

I decided then that the staff members were entitled to their view.

On another occasion in another store I complained of the noise and was rudely told by the shop manager that some people called it music.

I explained that music to me is what I want to listen to and anything else, especially at the volume used, was noise. That business has now gone defunct.

When I visited Edinburgh a large department store could not comply with my request for a set of ear defenders, and a book shop, of all places, sounded more like a discotheque. We returned home and spent the intended several hundred pounds on the internet instead; ever since, that has been my main source of shopping.
