The letter by Ellis Thorpe (21 October) rightly raises the issue of China’s record on Tibet.

First Minister Alex Salmond refused to meet the Dalai Lama, whose request for some autonomy rather than independence for Tibet is resolutely opposed by the Chinese government.

In contrast, Prime Minister David Cameron did meet the Dalai Lama, and agreed to a referendum on Scottish independence on the basis of mutual respect.
