Housing crisis

The results of a Scottish Liberal Democrats freedom of information request published last week showing that around 13,000 households in Scotland have spent more than ten years waiting for a social home comes as no surprise to Shelter Scotland. We warned in 2012 that the waiting list for council homes across Scotland would take more than seven years to clear.

Let’s not forget that it’s not just the length of time that is shocking, it’s the unsuitable conditions and uncertainty that some people have to live with while waiting for a home.

To start tackling our housing crisis, we all need to ensure that at least 10,000 new social homes a year are built for the foreseeable future.”
