House the needy

It WAS with some sadness that I heard Ed Miliband at the Labour Party conference mentioning the social housing crisis.

He suggested that a scheme currently being piloted by two Labour councils in England – which allows those who contribute to their communities the right to jump the housing queue – should be rolled out nationally.

It sounds commendable, but what about those who are unable to join in the queue jumping?

They are too busy caring for relatives, saving the country a fortune, working all hours on the minimum wage.

Are they to be denied their right to a decent house for their families? Social housing was originally built for the needy, not the greedy.

Mr Miliband’s message to his conference should have been that we must put social housing on the agenda and help people access what everyone is surely entitled to: a decent home.
