Honest broker

Brian Monteith sets out the enormity of the UK’s national debt, and the rate at which it is increasing (Perspective, 5 May).

If Scotland becomes independent, Scotland might be expected to take its share of that debt. It is the first government elected after independence which will decide initially how Scotland’s share of the debt will be managed.

Unlike some correspondents to your pages, who portray the UK economy in glowing terms, Mr Monteith is to be congratulated for his honesty.
