Historic struggle

One of your correspondents (Letters, 15 June) asked why the SNP is getting involved in trying to retrieve the William Wallace letter.

Well, if you want to blame someone, blame me; together with my friend David R Ross, the biker historian who passed away in January, I have spent five years trying to get this letter back.

To achieve our goal I have asked the Scottish Government and top Scottish historians to get involved. This is a historical letter that has nothing to do with any political motives.

As a historian, I am of the opinion that the Williame Wallace letter should be in Scotland and should be on public display in our national museum.

We have little enough contemporary evidence which actually ties up with the story of William Wallace and that is why it should be here in Scotland.

Much of what is in the public domain is of a fantasy nature, such as the movie Braveheart.

The letter shows that, after the defeat at Falkirk, William Wallace still had an important role to play on the international stage.
