Historic cinema

It is important that people write to or telephone the City of Edinburgh Council about the plans to change the Cameo Cinema into a restaurant and bar. Two small screens will be retained, but for how long?

The Cameo is different from the multiplexes in the city and the council should think carefully before signing away a historical cinema, which many people enjoy, so that the main, architecturally interesting, 200-seat auditorium can be ripped apart to form a restaurant and bar.

The council has the last word. Let's hope it uses it wisely.

The Cameo is not only Edinburgh's oldest cinema; it is one of the three oldest in Scotland, and also the only one of those with anything like its original interior intact. Perhaps Historic Scotland could consider spot-listing it to help ensure that it is preserved intact.
