Only 17 per cent of statistics snatched from thin air? By citing this statistic, Alastair Kidd (Letters, 9 December) does our government a great disservice.

The title he mocks (Dr) is a sort of campaign medal awarded for years of personal endeavour and financed not by the state but, at great sacrifice, through concurrent paid employment. I shall continue to wear it.
