Higher education

Your “brief history of the Scottish education system” (14 September) suggested Highers were introduced in 1962, along with the new O-grades. O-grades offered a qualification at the end of S4, by then the leaving age, and replaced “Lowers”, which had been an S5 alternative to Highers.

“Highers”, Scottish Higher Leaving Certificate, were introduced in the 19th century.
