Helping hand

Two letters (Rev MacPherson and John Doble, 2 May) written from England express the writers’ love for Scotland, fearing they may be spurned, even heartbroken, if the Yes vote is successful.

May I console them? I have worked in England and admire many aspects of its people and culture, including its reputation for fair play. I may not vote Yes in the referendum but even if I do it will not be because I want Scotland to “leave” England.

If they love Scotland will they support us after a Yes vote through the inevitable negotiations with Westminster – on the pound, Trident, the EU, North Sea oil and goodness knows what else?

How deep is their love? Practical support after the referendum would be of help, not romance before it.
