Hard Labour

Shadow Scottish secretary Douglas Alexander (your report, 1 March) accuses the Scottish Government of allowing the constitutional debate to crowd out other vital issues.

Nonsense. Has he not heard of gay marriage, minimum alcohol pricing, curriculum for excellence, the single police force, free university education? Indeed, some people think the government has been over-active.

South of the Border, it is the Conservatives who have been active: privatising the NHS, introducing austerity measures, and now following Scotland on gay marriage and alcohol minimum pricing.

And what does Labour propose? A cut in VAT in England and ending free prescriptions and bus passes in Scotland. Heady stuff.
