Haggis US style

Your editorial explaining the practice in the USA in presenting upon the altar pieces of tartan in the church to receive a blessing (24 August) is, I can confirm, well established.

The 10-year April Tartan Day celebratory programme of events in New York would not be complete without such a service.

Your tease that “any day we will be reading about the blessing of the haggis” reminds me of a splendid dinner I addressed some years ago in Chicago, hosted by the St Andrew’s Society of Illinois.

It was called “The Feast of the Haggis”, and the highlight of the evening was when a large cardboard haggis is rolled like an Easter Egg on to the middle of the floor and opened for a delightful young girl dressed head to toe in tartan to appear as the Haggis Queen of the Year.
