Gullanegate

I venture to trump the 
convictions of Messrs Mayes and McAllister (Letters, 12 May) with regard to the pronunciation of Gullane.

As a small boy I had a school master who proclaimed “Gullane” as opposed to “Gyllane”.

His logic was that he lived there, and therefore knew.

Besides, any errors on our part were corrected with cheerful distribution of his tawse. None of us had the gall to differ.
