Growing support

I NOTE that Johann Lamont is particularly concerned with the fall in support for Labour among women voters.

Repeated polls show that opposition to nuclear weapons is significantly stronger among women than men in Scotland. Ms Lamont was the only candidate in the leadership contest who did not respond to a Scottish CND survey on Trident. From her silence, we must assume that Ms Lamont, like her colleagues Ken Macintosh and Tom Harris, supports the present deployment of the UK’s WMD, Trident.

This is despite the absolute condemnation of Trident by the Church of Scotland, the Scottish Catholic Bishops, STUC and all sections of civil society. This moral issue dwarfs all others. Mohammed Bedjaoui, president of the International Court in the Hague, has affirmed that nuclear weapons are “the Ultimate Evil”.

If Ms Lamont wants to win the support of women, perhaps she could start by abandoning craven support for Westminster chauvinism and speak out against Trident.
