Grim view of Scottish tourism industry

When you fundamentally dislike people, the hospitality industry is not for you, yet a huge number of the people involved in the industry in Scotland do hate people and that is reflected in their business. It’s not much better in England, but Scotland is the worst in Europe.

I’ve only found one shocker in Scotland, and that was registered with VisitScotland. Most normal people are extra-friendly to visitors, except for bus drivers.

It’s not just the poor quality of service and the abysmal state of the accommodation provided by many hotels and B&Bs, but the ridiculous prices charged by many of them. I have come across some places which are little better than back-packers’ bunkhouses but with prices similar to the four- and five-star hotels elsewhere in the world. We may continue to get overseas visitors to Scotland, but if we want them to return after the shock of what they get for their money we need to get our act together.

There is an element of truth in what Stephen Leckie is saying, but I love his indignation that guest houses and B&B owners are actually trying to make a profit. How dare they!

I agree there are some bad places in the Highlands, although, in our experience and knowledge, most are very good and offer great value for money.

I run a tourism business and I only get positive feedback about customers’ experiences in Scotland. Wind farms have never once been criticised or mentioned.

I’ve got an idea. Let’s build grotesque and elitist golf courses, and rip the Victorian heart out of our cities to satisfy an ageing man’s ego. That should start pulling them in.
