Greyhounds not in for luxury ride

WITH reference to your article "It’s a dog’s life... of total luxury" (News, May 21), I would urge your readers not to be taken in by this proposal to house retired greyhounds in the lap of luxury for their natural life-spans.

I believe this won’t happen because it will be far too costly. Is anybody really going to discard a dog at the age of two to five years because it can no longer make money and then pay to keep it to keep it in luxury for another ten years or so in an air-conditioned kennel?

Greyhound racing is a business like any other. I believe this is another smokescreen to hide the truth of the inherent cruelty of the industry from the public. Big business and animal welfare principles simply do not mix.
