Greater role for rail

I have been looking through the list of planned infrastructure projects to which the ministers want to give priority treatment (your report, 25 February).

The emphasis on road shows little awareness that rail might offer a better solution. It is clear that the freight hub at Grangemouth and the container traffic at Rosyth might be better served by rail than by road as, for instance, at Felixstowe.

We should therefore envisage a greater role for rail at these ports, which would comply with the insistence by the government on a modal shift for freight from road to rail.
