Great Danes

While talking to a work colleague who hails from Denmark I was surprised to learn that they have 13 MEPs for a country with about the same population as Scotland while we have only six.

Is the difference due to their nation status as opposed to ours as a region of the UK allocated numbers from Westminster? Just wondering.
