Goodwin Mone

After weeping copiously through Michelle Mone’s marriage heartache and then coming upon Jackie Stewart’s dire warning on the next page that Fred Goodwin may quit Scotland following all his personal and business calamities, I was an emotional wreck.

Then it occurred to me – surely they should become an item and both leave Scotland, preferably with “Sir Jackie” as their counsellor.

The furore over stripping Fred Goodwin of his knighthood has made me think of my time as chair of planning at Edinburgh City Council, where my responsibilities included the naming of streets. When a developer wanted to name a new street in the Murrayfield area after the Hastings brothers we refused since our policy was that streets should not be named after living people.

We were widely held up to ridicule in the media for this policy at the time. I am not suggesting that Scott and Gavin Hastings are anything other than impeccable characters, but many public figures have proved to have feet of clay and I believe the Goodwin episode shows that our policy was fundamentally correct.
